Using Insurance for Psychiatric Care

Most health plans include coverage for mental health services, including psychiatric evaluation and follow-up visits. What you pay depends on your specific plan. Common terms include:

  • Deductible: the amount you pay each year before your plan starts covering costs.
  • Copay: a fixed amount you pay for a visit.
  • Coinsurance: a percentage of the cost you pay after meeting your deductible.
  • Out-of-pocket maximum: the most you will pay in a plan year for covered services.

Your plan documents or member portal will show these details. You can also call the member services number on your insurance card.

What to Ask Your Insurance Plan

Before your first visit, it helps to ask your plan:

  1. Are telehealth psychiatric visits covered, and how are they billed?
  2. Is Synchronous Mental Health in my network, or will out-of-network benefits apply?
  3. Do I have a deductible, and how much of it have I met?
  4. What is my copay or coinsurance for psychiatric evaluations and follow-up visits?
  5. Do I need a referral or prior authorization?
  6. Are there limits on how many visits are covered?

Keep notes on the date, the name of the person you spoke with, and what they said. This can help if a question comes up later.

Insurance and Telehealth

Many plans cover telehealth visits on the same terms as in-person care, but this varies by plan and by state. Because you must be located in a state where your provider is licensed at the time of your visit, your plan may also have rules about where you are. Our office can help you work through these questions.

If You Do Not Have Insurance or Prefer Not to Use It

Some people choose not to use insurance, or do not have coverage. If that is your situation, contact our office to ask about self-pay options and what to expect. Our team will explain how billing works so you know your costs up front.

Understanding the Cost of an Evaluation

A first psychiatric evaluation is longer than a follow-up visit, because it covers your full history. Cost varies depending on your plan and the type of visit. If you are comparing options, you may also find our article on the cost of a psychiatric evaluation helpful.

Our Approach to Treatment

Cost is only one part of the picture. Our psychiatric nurse practitioners take time to understand your symptoms and goals, and we build treatment plans with the fewest medications necessary. You will see the same provider for follow-up visits, which can make care more consistent.

Keeping Costs Manageable

A few habits can help you manage the cost of care. Check your coverage before your first visit and keep track of your deductible. Ask whether your plan has a limit on mental health visits. Keep your appointments, since missed visits can lead to fees depending on policy. And talk with your provider if cost is affecting your ability to attend. We would rather work out a plan with you than have you skip care you need.

Questions to Ask Our Office

When you call, you may want to ask: Which insurance plans do you accept? How do you bill for telehealth visits? What are your self-pay options? What is your cancellation policy? Our team is glad to answer these, so you know what to expect before you book.
