What We Treat

Are Unwanted Thoughts Taking Up Hours of Your Day?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder isn’t about being neat or organized. It’s being stuck in a loop of intrusive thoughts, images, or urges, and the rituals you perform to quiet them, even when you know they don’t make sense. For many people, OCD quietly eats up hours every day and gets harder to hide over time.

OCD often looks like:

  • Intrusive, distressing thoughts about harm, contamination, taboo subjects, or making a terrible mistake
  • Repeated checking of locks, appliances, messages, or your own memory
  • Washing, cleaning, counting, or arranging until something feels “just right”
  • Mental rituals like repeating phrases, reviewing past events, or seeking reassurance
  • Avoiding people, places, or situations that trigger obsessions
  • Knowing the compulsions are excessive but feeling unable to stop

Why Medication Matters in OCD Treatment

OCD is closely tied to how the brain regulates certain circuits and neurotransmitters, and medication can meaningfully lower the volume on obsessions and the pressure to act on them. For many patients, the right medication is what makes daily life manageable again. It’s also what makes other forms of treatment easier to engage with.

Approach + Philosophy

Our Approach to OCD Medication Management

Every patient starts with a full psychiatric evaluation to confirm an OCD diagnosis and screen for conditions that often travel with it, such as anxiety, depression, tic disorders, or ADHD.

SSRIs are the first-line medications for OCD, but OCD treatment works differently than treatment for depression or general anxiety. Effective doses are often higher, and full benefit can take 8 to 12 weeks, so patience and careful titration matter. If a first medication isn’t enough, your provider may try another SSRI, consider other options such as clomipramine, or add an augmenting medication. Each step is monitored closely for response and side effects.

Exposure and response prevention (ERP), a specialized form of therapy, is often recommended alongside medication. While Synchronous focuses on psychiatric medication management, we’re happy to coordinate with an ERP therapist you’re already seeing or help you find one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does OCD medication take to work?

Some improvement may appear within a few weeks, but a full trial usually takes 8 to 12 weeks at an effective dose.

Will I need to take medication forever?

Not necessarily. Many people stay on medication long-term for stability, but any decision to taper is made gradually and with your provider.
