What We Treat

If You Don't Feel Like Yourself Anymore, There May Be a Reason

Sudden anxiety that wasn’t there before. Rage over small things. Crying spells, brain fog, or sleep that falls apart around 3 a.m. For many women, perimenopause brings mood changes that are easy to dismiss as stress or burnout, and that are often left untreated because no one connects them to hormones.

Perimenopause can begin in your late 30s or 40s, years before your periods stop, and hormonal fluctuations during this time can trigger new mental health symptoms or intensify existing ones.

Common symptoms include:

  • New or worsening anxiety, irritability, or anger
  • Low mood, tearfulness, or loss of interest
  • Brain fog, forgetfulness, or trouble concentrating
  • Insomnia or night-time waking, often with night sweats
  • Mood symptoms that shift with an increasingly irregular cycle
  • A return of depression or anxiety you’d previously managed well

Premenopausal and Menopausal Medication Management

At Synchronous, our providers specialize in the mental health side of this transition. Every patient starts with a psychiatric evaluation that looks at your mood history, cycle changes, sleep, current medications, and past experiences like postpartum depression or PMDD, which can raise the risk of perimenopausal mood symptoms.

From there, your provider builds a medication plan aimed at your specific symptoms. That may include antidepressants or other medications that can ease mood swings, anxiety, and irritability, and some of these can also help with hot flashes and sleep disruption. If you’re already taking a psychiatric medication, we’ll review whether it still fits your needs as your hormones change.

Approach + Philosophy

Care That Works Alongside Your Other Providers

Hormone therapy is an important option for many women and is typically managed by an OB/GYN or menopause specialist. We coordinate with your other providers so your psychiatric medication plan and any hormone treatment work together rather than in isolation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can perimenopause really cause anxiety and depression?

Yes. Fluctuating estrogen and progesterone affect brain chemistry, and perimenopause is a recognized window of increased risk for mood symptoms, even in women with no prior history.

Do I need to be in menopause to get help?

No. Many patients come to us during perimenopause, often years before their final period.
